Citegeist is a free Zotero 7+ plugin (compatible with Zotero 8) that embeds citation intelligence directly into your reference manager. It pulls from OpenAlex, the free open index of roughly 250 million scholarly works.
For every item in your library, Citegeist adds:
- Citation count, field-weighted citation impact (FWCI), and percentile as sortable columns — so you can rank papers by field-normalized impact rather than raw counts.
- Journal-level metrics (two-year mean citedness, h-index) and membership flags for the UTD24, FT50, ABDC 2025, and AJG 2024 lists (3,177 journals covered).
- Year-over-year citation trend, so you can see whether a paper is still being cited.
- A citation-network browser for forward (citing works) and backward (reference) snowballing, with one-click “Add to Zotero” for any result.
- Automatic retraction flags from OpenAlex.
No account, API key, or subscription required. It works with DOIs, PubMed IDs, arXiv IDs, and ISBNs — and it’s the project of mine getting the most traction online.
